Itinerary

Day 1, Mon, Jun 06: Depart Cedar Rapids for Pittsburgh

Make your way to Cedar Rapids Airport (CID) where you will board your flight(s) to Pittsburgh (PIT). Upon arrival, make your way to the baggage claim area and collect your luggage. Proceed to the Arrival's Hall, where you will be greeted by your tour guide and/or driver. Transfer to our Hotel in the city of Latrobe, just in time for check-in. We will meet in the lobby where our pilgrimage will officially begin starting with a "Meet and Greet", followed by Mass. We will make our way to Saint Vincent Archabbey where we will take a short tour of its history as the oldest Benedictine Monastery in the United States, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Following, we will celebrate a private Mass, and then transfer to a local restaurant to enjoy a delicious dinner before retiring for a restful overnight.

Day 2, Tue, Jun 07: Latrobe - Johnstown - New York City

Your day will begin with breakfast, followed by some prayerful time with the Monks back at the Archabbey, followed by another private Mass. From there, we will board our bus and make our way to Johnstown. Once we arrive, our first visit will be to the Flight 93 National Museum. September 11th started like any other day, where Flight 93 boarded thirty-three passengers on a direct flight from Newark to San Francisco. However, the plan was taken over by terrorist who targeted domestic planes. The coordinates were changed to be direct towards to Washington DC where members of the Senate were in meetings. Through the quick and heroic actions of the passengers and crew, they failed to reach the intended target. The passengers and crew showed unity, courage, and defiance in the face of adversity. Today, the museum honors their actions and to better understand more fully, the legacy of Flight 93 and the events of that day. From there, we make our way to New York City, with a stop for lunch along the way. We will arrive in time to check-in and relax before we gather in the lobby to make our way to a local restaurant for dinner. You will have some free time after and then return to your room for a restful nights sleep.

Day 3, Wed, Jun 08: New York City

Wake up in the "City that Never Sleeps" and start your day with breakfast. We will then start the day by heading to the famous, Saint Patrick's Cathedral, whose origins date back to the middle of the 19th century. It is the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of New York - with the seat of its current Archbishop - Cardinal Timothy Dolan. From there, we will make our way downtown to the National 9/11 Memorial Museum commemorating the September 11th attacks. You will then have free time to grab lunch on your own, and the remainder of the day free to spend at your own leisure. We will meet back at the Hotel at a set time, where we will then board our transfer to Broadway to take in the famous "Come From Away". Dinner will follow the show, and then return to the Hotel for a restful nights sleep.

Day 4, Thu, Jun 09: New York City - St John's

Your day will begin with breakfast followed by our transfer to the local Airport where we board our flight to Newoundland, Canada. Upon arrival, make your way to the baggage claim area and collect your luggage. Proceed to the Arrival's Hall, where you will be greeted by your tour guide and/or driver. Transfer to our Hotel where we will check-in, and then board back on to the bus for a proper welcome to St. John's. This city in Newfoundland is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador province. It's harbor was settled by the British in the 1600's, whose houses in the downtown area are famous for their colorful houses. We will gather for an orientation and tour of George Street and the Historic City Centre. Dinner will be at a local restaurant, and then we transfer back to our Hotel for overnight.

Day 5, Fri, Jun 10: St John's - Gander

Start the day with breakfast, check-out, and then board your transfer to visit Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site. It is currently the oldest surviving lighthouse in the province. Built in 1836, the lighthouse stands 36 feet tall, perched atop a rocky bluff facing out to the North Atlantic. Imagine the life of a lone lighthouse keeper, and take in the solitude as the ocean crashes into the cliffs. From there, we make our way to Gander and visit the 9/11 memorial sites throughout the town. Once the 9/11 attacks took place, the U.S. airspace was closed. The 38 jetliners (totaling 6,600 passengers) bound for the United States were then forced to land at Gander International Airport. After spending 24 hours on board while security checked all bags, the passengers were greeted with a feast prepared by those who lived there. Bus drivers (whom were strike) left their picket lines to help drive the passengers from the airport to the local schools and Churches that were converted to shelters. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated, while a middle school provided showers, computers for email, and televisions. Over the next four (4) days, the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that lasted a lifetime. As a way of saying "Thank You", scholarship funds were founded, and donations came in to replace the school with new computers and televisions. We will celebrate a private Mass nearby, and then check-in to your Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6, Sat, Jun 11: Gander - Twillingate - Gander

Following breakfast, we will make our way to Twillingate, located in the Notre Dame Bay, and board a specifically designed fiberglass tour boat to see icebergs, whales, and other sea life. Upon docking, we will take a tour of this beautiful seaside town, and then return to Gander where we will celebrate a private Mass at St. Joseph Church. We will make our way to dinner, and then relax in the evening before we retire for a restful nights sleep.

Day 7, Sun, Jun 12: Gander - St John's

Start the day with breakfast, and then transfer to the town of St. John's. From there, we will meet our Tour Escort and take in the many sites offered, starting at Signal Hill (the highest point that overlooks the city). Continue to Quidi Vidi Village, pronounced as "Kitty Vitty", a quaint fishing village that will transport you to a different time. From the idyllic cottages along the roadside, to the wharf lined with colorful fishing stages. Next, we visit the Museum at the Rooms, telling the stories of this city and its diverse people. Containing over a million specimens and artifacts brings these stories to life. We will conclude this day with a visit to the famous colorful houses of "Jellybean Row". Make your way to celebrate Mass, followed by dinner, and a restful nights sleep.

Day 8: Mon, Jun 13: St John's - Airport - Cedar Rapids

This morning, you will pack up your bags and make your way downstairs for breakfast. From there, you will identify your bag before it is placed on the bus, and then we will transfer to the airport for our return flight(s) home.
