*Optional Post-Tour to Knock, Ballintubber Abbey, Croagh Patrick & Galway    |    Aug 27 - 30, 2018

GA082018

Join Us as we celebrate the 9th Annual World Meeting of Families in the Emerald Isle! "The Gospel of Family, Joy to the World!"

Long known as the "Isle of Saints and Scholars", Ireland was the epicenter of Christian learning while the rest of Europe was in the Dark Ages. As the home of Saints Patrick, Bridget, Columba, and many more, Ireland also provides many faith-based attractions- from the Book of Kells, (an elaborately scripted 9th-century version of the Four Gospels), to the Knock Shrine (a leading Marian pilgrimage site), historic abbeys, Cathedrals, Churches, and high crosses.

Many wonderful events will be taking place at the World Meeting, as well as throughout Dublin. That includes Liturgical and Cultural Events, Testimonies, Lectures, and Workshops during the week - as well as Special Mass and Events in the evening! Not to mention the Opening and Closing Celebrations, and Concerts.

This morning meet with your driver and guide and depart from Dublin for Knock. En route we will visit Glendalough. We will make a stop at Clonmacnoise, an ancient monastic site. Founded by St. Ciaran in the mid-6th century, it became the great centre of religion, and learning. In a stunning setting, the site includes the ruins of a Cathedral, seven Churches, two round towers, and the largest collection of early Christian graveslabs in western Europe. The original high crosses and a selection of graveslabs are on display at the visitor centre. Continue on to Galway and check into your hotel. Overnight, dinner, bed and breakfast at your hotel in Galway or area.

Day2
Tuesday - August 28, 2018 - Galway - Westport

This morning depart Galway for Westport. Journey through the Conne-mara Region. Connemara is a land of lakes and rivers, bogs and moun-tains. A land of small villages where Gaelic is still the spoken language and where little has changed since the beginning of time. It is without a doubt the wildest and the most romantic part of Ireland. On its northern shore the land is harsher and more secret, with spectacular views of the Ocean and the beautiful fjord of Killary Harbour, as well as the steep mountains overlooking numerous lakes and large bog areas. Connemara is a real paradise for Nature lovers and those in search of strong emo-tions. Next, visit Kylemore Abbey. Kylemore Abbey is stunningly locat-ed in the Kylemore Pass in Connemara. Today, the abbey is home to the Irish order of Benedictine nuns. Continue to Westport and visit Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre. Croag Patrick is one of the most famous pilgrim-age sites in Ireland, where St. Patrick fasted for 40 days in 441 AD in his efforts to convert Ireland to Christianity and the custom has been handed down faithfully from generation to generation. You can climb the steps to the first Station while enjoying spectacular views of Clew Bay and its islands. Check in to your hotel. Overnight, bed & breakfast at your hotel in Westport. Special buffet supper hosted at the home of Catherine and Stewart Wiley, at the foot of Croagh Patrick.

Day3
Wednesday - August 29, 2018 – Westport - Knock

This morning we will depart for the National Shrine of Our Lady of Knock. Enroute, we will visit Aughagower. Aughagower is situated mid-way along the Tochar Phadraig ancient pilgrimage route from Ballin-tubber Abbey to Croagh Patrick. One of the monuments still in existence is the “Leaba Phadraig” (St. Patrick’s Bed) where the saint is reputed to have slept. Pilgrims performed stations between the bed and the Holy well, “Tobair na nDeachan” (the Well of the Deacons) which has now dried up. St. Senach, who was created Bishop of Aughagower by St. Pat-rick, was the founder of the first monastery here. The lovely historic vil-lage of Aughagower is dominated by the striking tenth century round tower and a medieval Church, both partly restored. We will also visit Ballintubber Abbey. Built in 1216 for the Canon Regulars of St Augus-tine, Ballintubber Abbey is the only Church in Ireland that was founded by an Irish King and which is still in use today. It was built next to the site of an earlier Church founded by St Patrick in the 5th century. It is also known as "the Abbey that refused to die" as through its many vicissi-tudes, including burning by Cromwell's army in 1653, the Abbey has remained a place of worship despite years of continuous attacks and reli-gious repression. Ballintubber retains an air of ancient beauty and spiritu-ality and has been restored with simple elegance. Ballintubber is one of the most impressive Church buildings in Ireland today. There is a video display and an interpretative centre at the Abbey and the grounds are landscaped to portray spiritual themes. Continue to Knock for Holy Mass. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Knock.
