Day 2 | Monday, October 8, 2012: New Mexico
After breakfast mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi built in 1869. It is the third church to occupy this portion of the land. The first Chapel constructed by Franciscan friars in 1610 was destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680; the second was an adobe church build in 1717 which St. Francis Cathedral replaced. We will pray at the La Conquistadora, the oldest statute of the Blessed Virgin in the United States. We will visit the Loretto Chapel where we will see the “miraculous” staircase. In 1853, the Sisters of Loretto opened the Academy of Our Lady of Light boarding school for girls. The Sisters believed that the school needed a chapel. Funds were raised and work on the Loretto Chapel began in 1873. When the Chapel was near completion, the Sisters realized that access to the choir loft, 22 feet above, would be by ladder as a staircase would take up too much space in the small chapel. However, climbing the ladder would pose great difficulty for the Sisters. As such, the Sisters prayed a novena to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. Legend says that on the ninth and final day of the novena, a man showed up at the chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later the elegant circular staircase was completed and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. Some believe that he was St. Joseph himself. Built without nails, only wooden pegs, the staircase has two 360 degree turns with no visible means of support. Dinner. Overnight at Hotel and Spa Santa Fe.
Day 3 | Tuesday, October 9, 2012: New Mexico
After Mass & breakfast we will visit El Santuario de Chimayo. Tucked in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains, the tiny church in the village of Chimayo is called the Lourdes of America. A miraculous crucifix was unearthed at this site. Many pilgrims come seeking miracles of healing from the church and its little well of sacred red dirt. Some rub the dirt on the part of the body that needs healing. Others take it home to place on an altar. Those who have been healed often make a second pilgrimage to the Santuario to give thanks, leaving behind their crutches, braces, and prayers of thanks which fill a side room. We will take a short walk to the Santo Nino Chapel and Museum. The purpose of the museum is to relate the childhood of Jesus and to honor the transcendent spirituality of children, family, joy, innocence, and humility. Dinner. Hotel and Spa Santa Fe.

Day 5 | Thursday, October 11, 2012: New Mexico
After Mass & breakfast we will take the High Road to Taos Scenic Byway which is part of a spectacular loop drive that passes Native American pueblos, several small and remote villages built by early Spanish colonists, high alpine forests, and on the return route, chasms carved into the rock by the seasonal rapids of the Rio Grande River. As the road winds at the high elevation through Carson National Forest we enter the town of Las Trampas to visit the church, San Jose de Gracia, completed in 1776 and among the best preserved churches of the Spanish colonial adobe style. Past Las Trampas is the lovely community of Picuris Pueblo, the most remote of the eight northern New Mexico Indian pueblos. It is home to a Spanish colonial church as well as a thriving buffalo herd. We will have mass in Rancho De Taos at the church of San Francisco de Asis, said to be the most photographed church in the United States. From here is only a short jaunt to Taos proper where we will view the miraculous picture of Jesus that glows in a way that seems supernatural. Lastly, we will visit the oldest Lourdes grotto where phenomena have also been reported. Arrangements will be made for dinner along the route. Hotel and Spa Santa Fe.
